Intravitreal injectables for targeted drug delivery- A brief overview



Intravitreal Injectables (IVT) are used in treatment of different ophthalmic conditions, like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), etc. The competition for IVT in market is huge. Due to increasing demand, the market growth of IVT is notable.

Healthcare system has become advanced with help of Research. IVT is one of these advances. IVT is an intraocular drug delivery medium which is used to treat several ophthalmic conditions. With help of IVT, the drug is injected into the vitreous cavity of eye to ensure targeted delivery and this leads to increased efficacy of drug.

IVT is most commonly used for the treatment of DR and AMD. AMD is a condition where patient with age 50 or above undergo loss of vision. It occurs because of VEGF-A (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) which damages the macula of eye and hence vision loss occurs. there are some IVT drugs( monoclonal antibodies) in the market which when administered binds with VEGF-A and inhibits its action. Another health condition is DR, which occurs mostly in diabetic patients and it is also treated by IVT.

Additionally, IVT is an better alternative instead of eye drops in the treatment of eye infections like endophthalmitis using antimicrobial and antifungal drugs. As we discussed, IVT has a number of uses and hence incrased demand. There are several competitors amongst the market who manufacture IVTs. Different products have different parameters which affect their quality and market demand.

Factors influencing growth of market: It is important to study different factors which influence the market. At such time, SWOT analysis plays an important role so that company can work on those parameters. 

Different region have different impact on health of a person. For example, in countries like India and China due to increased population and rising number of diabetis patients, the risk of DR is also more. In such region market growth for IVT will be high.

The type of drug that is made by a company is also important. for example, there are various classes of drugs like steroids, antibiotics etc. which can be given through intravitreal route for treatment but, The demand for anti-VEGF drugs is high as compared to other IVT drugs. also, competititors for anti-VEGF drug products are less and hence manufacturing such drugs will increase its market value. 

Additionally, There are other factors like quality, cost, competition in market for IVT products, different marketing strategies etc. that influence market demand of products on a large amount and hence should be considered always.
